She didn’t learn motherhood from books.
She learned it from watching women
who never sat down,
from hands that cracked in winter
and still found a way to be gentle.
She loved us before she understood us.
Before the world could bruise us.
Before life taught her
how much it would cost
to care this hard.
She woke up tired
and went to bed worried—
and called it just another day.
Cold coffee, warm meals,
a heart always on duty.
She fed the house before she fed herself
and never once asked
to be thanked.
Her love wasn’t loud.
It didn’t post or pose.
It stayed.
It showed up in the quiet—
in scraped knees kissed better,
in hard truths spoken soft,
in prayers said low
when the lights were already off.

She knew the weight of silence,
knew when a child needed space
and when they needed arms.
She learned how to hold a storm
without letting it touch us.
Motherhood carved her into someone stronger
than she ever planned to be.
It gave her lines around her eyes
from laughing through worry,
and a spine built from standing
when everything in her wanted to fall.
She let go a thousand times—
first steps, first loves, first goodbyes—
and every time
it took something out of her
she never asked to get back.
Even now,
when her children are grown
and the house echoes different,
she still listens for footsteps.
Still leaves the light on.
Still loves like someone
might need her tonight.
She didn’t raise perfect children.
She raised grounded ones.
The kind who know how to stay,
how to forgive,
how to love without keeping score.
The world calls her ordinary.
But history is written quietly—
in the way we love,
in the way we endure,
in the way we become
a little more like her
with every passing year.
That’s old love.
That’s old soul.
That’s a mother.
